Articling Position

Hicks Adams LLP is a 22 member firm whose practice is restricted to criminal and quasi-criminal cases. There are six partners and 16 associates of varying levels of experience. We litigate cases at all levels of court including POA trials, summary conviction trials and appeals. The core of the practice, however, focuses on the conduct of trials in indictable matters. Several members of the firm are frequent visitors to the Court of Appeal for Ontario and have numerous reported decisions to their credit.

The firm is also involved in conducting private prosecutions under various Provincial statutes that regulate workplace safety issues. An articling student can expect regular exposure to cases at all levels of court, save perhaps the Supreme Court of Canada. The students are largely responsible for running the firm's busy set-date court lists, reviewing initial disclosure, and conferring with clients and counsel assigned to their cases to ensure that the matters are brought through the initial, administrative, phase of the court system in a timely and effective manner. Students can also expect a liberal exposure to the preparation of case briefs, charter motions, bail reviews, bail pending appeal applications, and the drafting of facts, affidavits, memoranda of law and instructions from clients.

Students will often be given the opportunity to attend with counsel on cases where they have played a role in its preparation; this includes trials, preliminary inquiries, and the occasional appeal.

Each year we hire five articling students and five summer students. We accept applications for articling positions in accordance with the LSUC' guidelines and we interview in the same period as set out by the LSUC. We require a cover letter, C.V., transcripts (undergrad and law school), letter of references and a writing sample if available.
